Canon SD800 IS Digital ELPH (IXUS 850 IS) Concise Review

Canon SD800 IS Digital ELPH (IXUS 850 IS)

The SD800 IS (IXUS 850 IS), announced just before Photokina 2006 back in September, is a sister model to the popular SD 700 IS (IXUS 800 IS), one of the better ultra compact models launched last year. As well as an extra million pixels or so, the new model has one very welcome new feature; a 28-105mm (equiv.) zoom lens, making it one of the few cameras in this sector of the market with true wideangle capabilities. Other changes include an ISO 1600 option, DIGIC III processor (complete with face detection focus mode) and a better screen. We liked the SD 700 IS a great deal, and on paper the SD 800 IS looks like another winner. So let's find out if it can deliver the goods, starting as ever with the headline specification:

*7.1 Megapixels and 3.8x zoom
*Wide angle 28mm lens with Optical Image Stabilizer
*DIGIC III with Advanced Noise Reduction and Face Detection AF/AE
*Safety Zoom for extra telephoto reach
*ISO 1600
*High resolution 2.5" LCD
*17 shooting modes including VGA movies (30 fps) with sound
*Range of optional accessories including Underwater Case
I received this camera for my birthday and cannot believe how easy it is for me to take such great pictures. I own the Canon Rebel 2000 35mm and I could never get the pictures to come out this way...it's hard to get a bad shot with this camera!!! I never wanted to get into this whole point and shoot thing and was quite reluctant but boy was I WRONG! 1000% Satisfied and I will never go back. The quality of the images can't be beat. They look like professional shots and have since looked into photography for the first time because it has inspired me to continue taking such great pics. I will post the pics up soon...you won't believe your eyes! Under 300 bucks = Priceless Shots more details

Canon SD900 Digital ELPH (IXUS 900 Ti) Concise Review

Canon SD900 Digital ELPH (IXUS 900 Ti)

Announced (along with a handful of other PowerShots) just before Photokina in September 2006, the SD900 (we'll call it this throughout the review - see below for EU/Japanese names) sits at the top of Canon's successful ELPH / IXUS range and offers the highest resolution yet; 10 megapixels (on a 1/1.8" CCD). It also features Canon's new DIGIC III processor and another first; a solid titanium body, which as well as adding a touch of class makes for a lighter, more durable camera. Otherwise there's no surprises here; the IXUS formula is one that has served Canon well, and the SD900 is functionally pretty much indistinguishable from its other recent stable mates. So is the SD900 the ultimate ELPH or a megapixel too far dressed up in a snazzy jacket? Let's find out, starting as ever with the headline features:

*Titanium body with Perpetual Curve design and Touch Control Dial
*10.0 Megapixels and 3x optical zoom
*DIGIC III with Advanced Noise Reduction and Face Detection AF/AE
*Digital Tele-Converter and Safety Zoom for extra telephoto reach
*2.5” super-high resolution LCD with wide viewing angle
*ISO 1600 for flash-free low light shooting
*18 shooting modes including XGA movies
*My Category automatic image tagging
*Range of optional accessories including Underwater Case
I bought this camera to replace my SD400 (great camera too!!) and I found a lot of great features, such as multi face recognition, the AE is improved too. 10mp seems to be too much for such light sensor size, but it worth when you use the digital zoom, the image is nearly without visible pixels even at full 12X zoom!!. Great pictures make the camera worth the money. 5 starts without any doubt. more details

Canon EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi/ Kiss X Digital Review

EOS 400D / Digital Rebel XTi
Almost exactly three years since Canon changed the digital SLR market forever (with the $1,000 EOS 300D) they announced the third generation of their affordable entry level series, the EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi). This new camera follows the design of the EOS 350D, being very compact and relatively lightweight but not compromising on manual controls or in-use performance. The headline changes are another two megapixel step up (to ten megapixels), the nine-point AF sensor from the EOS 30D, a new dust removal system which includes anti-static surface coatings, low-pass filter vibration and software based dust pattern removal. Less important but just as noticeable are the removal of the status LCD, replaced instead by a camera settings screen on the now larger 2.5" LCD monitor and the eye proximity sensor just below the viewfinder to turn this off when composing your shot.

This camera is so intelligent and forgiving it's beyond belief. I have taken fast moving animals, close-ups, landscapes and shots with flash and as yet I have not changed a single setting on the camera. The quality of pictures (especially in good light) is awesome. An excellent price too. Five stars. more details

Canon EOS 40D Review

The EOS 40D becomes the sixth Canon 'prosumer' digital SLR, a line which started back in 2000 with the EOS D30, and how far we've come. It's been eighteen months since the EOS 30D and although on the surface the 40D looks like a fairly subtle upgrade there's a lot that makes this an even better camera. Of course we expect a step up in megapixels, and so the 40D comes with a ten million pixel CMOS sensor with the same sort of dust reduction as the EOS 400D, an ultrasonic platform which shakes the low pass filter. Other improvements bring the EOS 40D closer into line with the EOS-1D series, these include a move to the same page-by-page menu system, both RAW and sRAW (2.5 MP), 14-bit A/D converter and 14-bit RAW, cross-type AF points for F5.6 or faster lenses, a larger and brighter viewfinder, interchangeable focusing screens, a larger LCD monitor (3.0") and faster continuous shooting (6.5 fps).

The Canon 40D is an excellent camera. Add a Canon 17 - 55mm f2.8 IS lens and you have a very good low light camera. I liked the Canon 10D before I got the 40D and was surprised how much better this camera is. The 3 inch LCD and live view is a real improvement. more details
